"A friendly and caring church growing with God and community"

December 2010

Jesus When we hear the name of Jesus spoken I suspect many different images and thoughts come to mind. I suspect that many, maybe most of us, think of the stories we have heard about Jesus maybe stories that our parents or grandparents read to us when we were young - or stories we learned in Sunday School.

At this time of the year perhaps we think primarily about the stories surrounding the birth of Jesus.

Many symbols of Christmas which remind us of the stories of Jesus can be found around our home. We become busy decorating our home for the Christmas season in anticipation of the season.  We decorate the Christmas Tree. We display the Manger scenes - all symbols which remind us of the stories recorded in the Gospels. The stories of Christmas, however, are not the only stories we hear and share.

For some of us maybe the first stories we heard were stories after we became adults. Whatever the case may be the name of Jesus brings many different stories to mind and conjures up many different images and thoughts .So many relationships that Jesus has established between Himself and us.

The Apostle John simply called Jesus the Word of God. “The Word became flesh and lived among us and we have seen His glory, the glory as of a Father’s only Son, full of Grace and truth.

In Jesus, the amazing grace, mercy and love of God was shown in all its glory. God’s enduring love to us is so wonderful.

Celebrate Jesus!

Remember and celebrate that Jesus came to us as the Living Word of God.

Jesus my Lord, my Life, my Way, my End.

KATE’S PRESBYTERIAN HERITAGE

Rachel Tolles grew up in the Rustin Avenue Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa, where she had perfect attendance at Sunday school for 12 years.

In 1937 she joined Morningside Presbyterian Church in Sioux City after attending with her friend Shirley Reid.  She was married at Morningside Pres on July 25, 1942, and was ordained as a deacon in 1980, shortly after her husband Howard passed away.

She served three times on the board of deacons and spent much of that time visiting church members and sending cards to the sick and shut-ins.  She estimated that for a couple years, she sent roughly 7 cards per week!

Although she doesn't often get to church these days, she still keeps in touch with her church through bulletins and newsletters, and she enjoys praying for and writing letters to family and friends.  She also likes finding jokes and other short quotes to send to her grandchildren in her many letters.

She shared these gems with her granddaughter, Kate Nelson, in a recent letter.

Presbytery Meeting Highlights

The fall stated meeting of the Presbytery of SD met on October 22, 2010 at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church located in Marion, SD. The meeting was called to order by Presbytery Moderator the Reverend Dr. Charles Ayars. Moderator Ayars welcomed everyone and asked at all members in attendance to pray for each other during the meeting as people spoke and reports were given. Attending the meeting from our church were: Pastor John, Meleta DeJong, past moderator of the Presbytery, Mary Jenner and me.

A major highlight of the meeting were the reports presented by the Presbytery Commissioners to the 219th General Assembly which was held in Minneapolis,MN. the first week of July. Commissioners were Reverend Mr. Denzel Nonhof, the Reverend Dr. Peter Reynen, Elder Tacey Braithwaite, and Elder Paula Zavitz. A slide presentation of General Assembly was presented and the commissioners expressed their feelings about the meeting commenting at how they marveled at the diversity found at General Assembly and expressed their appreciation for the Young Adult Advisory Delegates and for the prayerful committee meetings. Throughout the meeting our commissioners presented the overtures that were voted on during the assembly.  Each Presbytery in the country must now vote either in the affirmative or negative before these overtures become a part of the constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Our Presbytery will be voting on these overtures at the Stated Winter Meeting of the Presbytery which will take place on February 21, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron, SD.

A very brief summary of the overtures approved by General Assembly include 15 proposed amendments to the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The most controversial of these is G-6.0106b which has to do with ordination standards. (Among these standards is the requirement to live either in fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman (W-4.9001), or chastity in singleness). The proposed change would include the following language, (The examination shall include, but not be limited to, a determination of the candidate’s ability and commitment to fulfill all requirements as expressed in the constitutional questions for ordination and installation (W-4.4003).  The current and proposed requirements relate to the ordination of not only ministers, but elders and deacons as well.

The second major overture is the proposed New Form of Government. The New Form of Government reduces the size of the present Book of Order. The purpose of the New Form of Government is to provide flexibility at all levels of church governance and to make it easier for the church to carry out its mission.

The third major overture proposes amending The Book of Confessions by adding the Confession of Belhar. The Belhar Confession was adopted in 1986 by the Dutch Reformed Mission Church in South Africa to denounce the sin of apartheid.

If anyone would like to see in detail what is all included in these overtures, Pastor John, Meleta DeJong, and myself have printed documents of each proposal. Any of us, I’m sure would gladly share this vital information with you.

The rest of the meeting included receiving standing committee and commission reports. The Presbytery also celebrated the retirement of the Reverend Ms. Joan Jacobus, and the Reverend Dr. George Furniss. Also a number of Commissioned Lay Pastors were re-approved for another 3 years. The Presbytery also commissioned a new Lay Pastor. Ms. Donna Nickels was commissioned as Lay Pastor to serve the First Presbyterian Church of Raymond, SD.

The Synod report was presented by Ms. Ardeth Kocourek and the Reverend Dr. Carolyn Visser, Synod Commissioners. We were very exited to hear that Ms. Ardeth Kocourek, who served here at Oahe a few years back has been voted in as the new Synod of Lakes and Prairies Moderator.

As always much more occurred at the meeting that if I reported everything it would take quite a number of newsletters to cover, thus if anyone wants additional information, please let me know and I will share detailed minutes from the meeting.

It is truly an honor to represent Oahe and I would ask for your continued prayers.

---by Duane Jenner, Oahe Commissioner to Presbytery

STEWARDSHIP NEWS

Each year the Session asks the Financial Secretary  to predict the income for the following year.   The best tool for predicting income is the commitment cards that have been received.   If you haven’t submitted a commitment card, there is still time to do so.

If you still have the card and envelope that the Stewardship Committee provided, please mail it or drop it in the offering plate as soon as possible.   If you have misplaced them, feel free to write your name on a piece of paper with the amount of your commitment and drop that in the offering plate.

As has been previously stated by the Stewardship Committee, I will be the only one to see these commitments and I do understand that they are estimates that often change based on changing circumstances.   Thank you very much,

---John Ellefson, Financial Secretary

Advent Bible Study

December 1st we had our first get together to “study”  The Purpose of Christmas by Rick Warren.  We had a simple soup supper, watched a video and discussed the first purpose of Christmas, celebration.  We celebrate Jesus – his birth and his love for us.  We will have our second class Wednesday the 8th.  The soup will be provided by Marcia Graves and we will start eating at 5.

We will talk about the second purpose of Christmas, salvation.  The final class time has not been set since choir practice will be early on December 15th.  Please come on the 8th – you do not need to attend all of the classes.  The video will be started about 5:30, our OFFICIAL start time.  It is a relaxed, informal time to enjoy the company of your church family and spend time thinking about the “reason for the season”.

I hope you will be able to join us.  Invite a friend.

Unto Us a Child is Born

T’was the night before Christmas
and all thought the town, not a bed was empty,
no place could be found.

So out to the stable they made their way,
Mary and Joseph, to lie in the hay.

Mary was with child,
the one of Whom it was foretold,
The Messiah from God
the world’s sin He would hold.
Forgiveness from Heaven to this earth
He did bring,

We call Him our Father, our Lord, and our King.
Redemption from sin, His Blood did buy,
The words “It is finished” were His last breaths cry,
But He rose from the dead on that glorious third day,
And for his wayward children He made a straight way.

So give glory to God, making no room for strife,
For Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Spread the Good News to all who have an ear,
Share the Love of Christ at this festive time of year.
Be strong in the Lord and the strength of His might,
A Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Christmas…1st Corinthians 13 Style

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows,
Strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls,
But do not show love to my family,
I’m just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen,
Baking dozens of Christmas cookies,
Preparing gourmet meals and arranging a
Beautifully adorned table at mealtime,
But do not show love to my family,
I’m just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen,
Carol in the nursing home and give all
That I have to charity, but do not show
Love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels
And crocheted snowflakes,
attend a myriad of holiday parties and
sing in the choir’s cantata
but do not focus on Christ,
I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.

Love is kind, though harried and tired.

Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband.

Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way.

Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Loves never fails. Video games will break.  Pearl necklaces will be lost.  Golf clubs will rust.  But giving the gift of love will endure.

HARVEST HOME

Every year for the past 20 some years Ruth Smith has added a Harvest home display to our sanctuary in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday and in thanksgiving for all we have at Oahe.

The display stays up until just before before the beginning of Advent when the sanctuary is then decorated for the Advent and Christmas season.

This year's Harvest Home

Learning about the Disciples and Other Early Followers

This autumn and early winter, I have greatly enjoying Pastor John's Sunday School classes on the disciples and other early followers of Jesus.  We've learned about their place in Biblical history, their role in the early church, and their personal history.  Each disciple or follower gets his own Sunday.

Please join us.  Each lesson stands on its one.  You may attend as your schedule permits.  There will be one more session this year on December 12, 2010 and then a few more in the new year.

THE CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

My husband and I had been happily married (most of the time) for five years but hadn't been blessed with a baby.

I decided to do some serious praying and promised God that if he would give us a
child, I would be a perfect mother, love it with  all my heart and raise it with His word  as my guide.

God answered my prayers and blessed us with a son.

The next year God blessed us with another son.

The following year, He blessed us with yet another son.

The year after that we were blessed with a daughter.

My husband thought we'd been blessed right into poverty.  We now had four children, and the oldest was only
four years old.

I learned never to ask God for anything unless I meant it.  As a minister once told me, "If you pray for rain, make sure you carry an umbrella."

I began reading a few verses of the Bible to the children each day as they lay in their cribs..

I was off to a good start.  God had entrusted me with four children and I didn't want to disappoint Him.

I tried to be patient the day the children smashed two dozen eggs on the kitchen floor searching for baby chicks.

I tried to be understanding...

when they started a hotel for homeless frogs in the spare bedroom, although it took me nearly two hours to catch all twenty-three frogs.

When my daughter poured ketchup all over herself and rolled up in a blanket to see how it felt to be a hot dog, I tried to see the humor rather than the mess..

In spite of changing over twenty-five thousand diapers, never eating a hot meal
and never sleeping for more than thirty minutes at a time, I still thank God daily for my children.

While I couldn't keep my promise to be a perfect mother - I didn't even come close... I did keep my promise to raise them in the Word of God.

I knew I was missing the mark just a little when I told my daughter we were going to church to worship God, and she wanted to bring a bar of soap along to "wash up" Jesus, too.

Something was lost in the translation when I explained that God gave us everlasting life,
and my son thought it was generous of God to give us his "last wife."

My proudest moment came during the children's Christmas pageant.

My daughter was playing Mary, two of my sons were shepherds and my youngest son was a wise man.  This was their moment to shine.

My five-year-old shepherd had practiced his line, "We found the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes."

But he was nervous and said, "The baby was wrapped in wrinkled clothes."

My four-year-old "Mary" said,"That's not 'wrinkled clothes,' silly.
That's dirty, rotten clothes."

A wrestling match broke out between Mary and the shepherd and was stopped by an angel,
who bent her halo and lost her left wing.

I slouched a little lower in my seat when Mary dropped the doll representing Baby Jesus, and it bounced down the aisle crying, "Mama-mama."

Mary grabbed the doll, wrapped it back up and held it tightly as the wise men arrived.

My other son stepped forward wearing a bathrobe  and a paper crown,
knelt at the manger  and announced, "We are the three wise men, and we are bringing gifts of gold, common sense and fur."

The congregation dissolved into laughter, and the pageant got a standing ovation.

"I've never enjoyed a Christmas  program as much as this one,"laughed the pastor, wiping tears from his eyes

"For the rest of my life, I'll never hear the Christmas story without
thinking of gold, common sense and fur."

"My children are my pride and my joy and my greatest blessing," I said as I dug through my purse for an aspirin.

Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master.

Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher
.

Had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.

Had no army, yet kings feared Him.

He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.  He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.

He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.

Feel honored to serve such a Leader
who loves us.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
